Learn how to get the greatest tomatoes by following these ten steps:
- Tomatoes are a wonderful fruit, but not everyone likes them. Talk to someone in your region
who has grown tomatoes before – perhaps even at a local nursery! – to see whether they
think you’ll like them. - Turn the plants on their sides before arranging them.
- Plant them in a three-inch-deep trench with the top three inches of the trench visible.
- Add a fourth to a half cup of slow-release fertilizer to the area.
- Using wire mesh, create a cage around each plant. It will be around five feet high and two
feet in diameter. - By covering the cages with a floating row cover, you can keep the wind at bay.
- Fertilize your plants once a week with a hose-end applicator. Apply directly to the leaves.
- Once the tomatoes have produced their first crop, apply a side dressing of 2 to 3 teaspoons
of ammonium sulfate to the plants. After that, make sure to give them a good soaking with
water. - Wait to pick the tomatoes until they are around 30% ripe. If you don’t, the birds will eat
them. - Refrigeration is not recommended for tomato storage. To avoid spoilage, store them on the
counter if you don’t plan on refrigerating them.
