More black than black, the Black Pearl euchere immediately surprised me by the intensity of its color. Yet I am a difficult gardener! Believe me, if you were to choose only one Black Leaf Heuchera then you would choose the ‘Black Pearl’ Heuchera, as this new cultivar is the darkest thing right now. Impeccable all year round, you will also appreciate this perennial for its resistance to the sun and its rapidity of growth.
Heuchera ‘Black Pearl’, in detail
The Heuchera Black Pearl is a new variety of 2018, hybridized and selected in the United States by Hans Hansen. It comes from the Heuchère villosa, of which it has retained the vigor, resistance to dryness and speed of growth.
Its silky, intense black leaves are lined with a pretty mauve-pink reverse revealed by their intense undulations. Persistent, they retain their beautiful black color all year round, even in the sun! Only the oldest leaves are veiled with a silvery sheen before falling. Above this ebony foliage, stands, in the heart of summer, a cloudy white and pink bloom, of infinite lightness, which culminates at 50 cm in height.
Where to plant it in the garden? How to associate it?
Heuchère Black Pearl requires fertile and cool soil to maintain lush vegetation. Although it tolerates dryness and heat well, its foliage can nonetheless scorch under a blazing sun. Install it, therefore, preferably in partial shade while avoiding the sun during the hottest hours of the day. Under these conditions, it will provide you, in one season, with a generous dome of leaves with a wingspan of 30 cm!
It is cultivated in the garden, in beds and borders of beds, but will also perfectly dress tubs and pots. Pair it with tiarella, dwarf hostas, Solomon’s seals, ferns, low grasses such as sedges and hakonechloa, for a colorful and graphic atmosphere.
