David was a talented soccer player, especially for his young age. After every game, he would always stare out the window and dream about one day being able to play the sport professionally.
One day on the bus, a boy named Guillermo came up to David and asked if the seat beside him was taken. David shook his head and the kid promptly took a seat.
David didn’t know it, but Guillermo had his own aspirations for playing soccer. He really admired David’s talent and the kind of player that he was on the field. He also appreciated how much David’s teammates looked up to him and how cool his uniform and soccer shoes looked on him.
When Guillermo looked down at his own soccer shoes, he suddenly felt embarrassed. They were quite dirty and worn out and looked pretty banged up in comparison to David’s soccer shoes.
Guillermo couldn’t help but tell David that he really liked his soccer shoes. David politely told him that they were getting old and he had his eye on a new pair that were supposed to have unparalleled grip.
Unbeknownst to Guillermo, David had spent the past several months saving up for a new pair of soccer cleats. It was just his mother and two younger twin siblings in their family and David always found himself worrying about money.
On that same day, the two boys made a plan to go and visit the store where David had planned to purchase his new shoes. On the ride there, they went over a pothole that caused one of Guillermo’s shoes to come off and reveal a sizeable hole in the bottom to David.
