Because of their proximity to the stove, the cupboards in a kitchen are a magnet for cooking oil and other grease. Ideally, you should wipe down the fronts of your cabinets with a damp cloth, then a dry one, at least once every other week. However, we’ve all encountered a stubborn layer that will not come off with just a wipe.

Fortunately, whether you’re attempting to remove a fresh oil spatter from a batch of fries or years of caked-on residues in your newly purchased home, certain products include active chemicals that are better suited to cutting through the grime than others. In this article, we explain how to remove grease from kitchen cabinets using 3 different efficient cleansers.

Note: All of these methods are safe to use on finished wood cabinetry, but always test them in a small area first to ensure they do not degrade or discolor your cabinetry finish.

DISH SOAP AND WATER

Most kitchen cabinets may be cleaned with just warm water and a few drops of dish soap, which has strong degreasing characteristics.

  • In a bowl of warm water, combine a few drops of dish soap (not dishwasher detergent) and stir until soapy.
  • Use a sponge that has been dampened, but not dripping wet, with the solution to gently work the grease and grime out.
  • Remove any remaining dish soap with clean water.
  • Use a dry microfiber rag to completely dry the area.
